Insulators (commonly known as porcelain bottles) are composed of porcelain parts and hardware fittings, which are glued with cement adhesive in the middle. Porcelain parts ensure good electrical insulation strength of insulators, and hardware fittings are used to fix insulators.

What’s the function of insulators?

The main function of insulators is to firmly support and fix the current-carrying conductor, and form a good insulation between the current-carrying conductor and the ground.

Toughened glass insulator is a special insulating control, which can play an important role in overhead transmission lines. Insulators play two basic roles in overhead transmission lines, namely, supporting conductors and preventing current from returning to ground. These two important roles are that insulators can play a good insulation effect.

Insulators not only bear the weight of mechanical load, conductors and metal accessories, but also bear the wind load, snow load, conductor galloping and impact load caused by improper operation during transportation and installation in bad weather, and bear heavy load. From an electrical point of view, insulators should not only insulate wires from ground, but also withstand overvoltage impact caused by lightning and switching operation.

Types of insulators

According to different classification standards, insulators can be divided into high and low voltage insulators, suspension insulators, antifouling insulators and sleeve insulators according to their structures. These four kinds of insulators are used in different fields and have different restrictions and conditions.

The commonly used insulators used in overhead lines are pin insulators, hanging porcelain insulators, porcelain cross arms, butterfly insulators, bar insulators and tension insulators.
